Existence by Resistance: A UK case study exploring the lived experiences of ex-servicewomen navigating a male-dominated subculture in the criminal justice system

This study uses empirical evidence to inform the development of gender sensitive policy and practice to ensure services are appropriate for ex-Servicewomen within the Criminal Justice System.  

Aim

The aims of this study are to support services in identifying and addressing gender-blind policies and practices that may have a negative or alienating effect on ex-Servicewomen, and to establish a solid foundation for gender-aware Veteran studies in the UK. 

Research questions

  • What impact does military service have on the identities of female ex-Service members within the criminal justice system?  
  • How is the ex-Servicewoman understood as a distinct population within the criminal justice system and how does she understand her identity within this context?
  • How is the ex-Servicewoman understood by professionals working in the criminal justice settings? 

Sample / Participants

  • Criminalised ex-Servicewomen in England & Wales: 5-6 participants
  • Stakeholder focus group: 5-7 participants.
